An Italian judge handed the three men a suspended six-month sentence in a case that has been closely monitored for its implications on internet freedom.

Google reacted furiously to the ruling, which it feared could end up forcing providers to attempt the “impossible” task of pre-screening the thousands of hours of footage uploaded every day onto sites like YouTube.

DJ Collins of Google Europe told Sky News: “It’s outrageous for our employees and we’re going to appeal and going to stand fully behind them.

“But it’s also deeply alarming for the future of the web in Italy because how can any user-generated content website like a social network operate if their employees are criminally responsible for the illegal content that other people upload?”

The charges were sought by Vivi Down, an advocacy group for people with Down’s syndrome.

The group alerted prosecutors to the 2006 video showing an autistic student in Turin being beaten and insulted by bullies at school.

Senior product marketing manager Arvind Desikan was acquitted.

All four executives denied wrongdoing.

None was in any way involved with the production or uploading of the video but prosecutors argued it shot to the top of a most-viewed list and should have been noticed.

Rumours that Twitter will launch search-based advertising are gathering pace in cyberspace.

The social-networking phenomenon is preparing to deliver adverts according to users ‘feeds and needs’, reports say.

Although there has been no official announcement and Twitter has not commented on the rumours, according to AllThingsDigital, insiders are at “an early stage in developing the search-related model”.

The technology is known as ‘deep packet inspection’ (DPI). It works by scanning searches for key words and delivering related advertisements.

It is similar to Google’s sponsored results. A search for ipad, for instance, would generate an ad from Apple.

But privacy campaigners insist interception of personal searches can only be allowed with explicit consent from the user.
